This March DStv’s case files are jam packed with criminals so brazen you won’t believe they nearly got away with it – like the executives who stole R2 billion from hard working rural communities in The People vs VBS Bank or the robbers who targeted their own bank, only to be caught by the FBI in FEDS.

We go behind the scenes in the prison system with inmates working to expose corruption in Oscar-nominated series The Alabama Solution, and inside the funeral industry to expose one ghoulish criminal in The Mortician. The People vs VBS Bank

True crime documentary from the Steinheist team. Imagine waking up to find your life savings gone forever. According to VBS liquidator Walter Stander, that’s what happened to an 86-year-old woman who’d saved for 30 years to send her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to college. Instead she lost every cent in 2018, as did around 22 thousand others from low-income communities who’d trusted VBS bank – where a handful of the bank’s top executives slurped out nearly R2 billion for themselves.

The Alabama Solution

This Oscar-nominated and Critics’ Choice Award-winning HBO documentary film follows a six-year investigation into the Alabama prison system, using footage captured by imprisoned men with contraband cellphones who recorded conditions within the facility, exposing brutality and corruption. The film centres on the work of Free Alabama Movement leaders like Robert Earl Council and Melvin Ray, who organised protests from within the prison system around crimes like the murder of prisoner Steven Davis, who was beaten to death by guards.

The Mortician

This smash-hit three-part HBO docu-series takes us into one of the funeral industry’s most shameful cases. In Southern California in the 1980s, David Sconce of the family-run Lamb Funeral Home was accused of engaging in years of unethical practices, including holding secret mass cremations and giving families mixed ashes, theft from the dead by chopping off ring fingers and breaking teeth for gold fillings, and even trying to hire hitmen to intimidate, assault and murder rival morticians.

The Yoghurt Shop Murders

In 1991, four teenage girls – 13-year-old Amy Ayers, 17-year-old Eliza Thomas, 17-year-old Jennifer Harbison and Jennifer's 15-year-old sister, Sarah – were murdered at a frozen yoghurt shop in Austin, Texas. Their killer was not identified until September 2025. This series explores their friends’ and families’ long quest for justice, along with their experiences of mourning and memory. Lead police investigators John Jones and Paul Johnson and homicide investigator Mike Huckabay also weigh in on the case, along with journalists.

SAFTA-nominated true-crime docu-drama. In 1965, 12-year-old cousins Issie Fourie (Lane Vertue) and Petro Nel (Izabella Louw) were kidnapped, raped and murdered in the Free State town of Odendaalsrus. Issie’s brother, André (played by Janru Steenkamp in 1966, and Beer Adriaanse in 1984), swore to get justice. Eighteen years later, one of the killers confessed. The series focuses on the far-reaching impact of gender-based violence and racism on the girls’ families, and the families of local household workers.

Lost Women of Alaska

Octavia Spencer’s production company Orit Entertainment turns its attention to the 2018 and 2019 murders of two Alaska Native women, Veronica Abouchuk and Kathleen Jo Henry. Public outcry and some unlikely heroes refused to let their cases grow cold, drawing eyes to the growing number of dead Indigenous women dumped along Alaska's Seward Highway who were dismissed as “runaways” or “addicts”. Their case unmasked a South African-born serial killer who ranted about Black people and crime in online forums.

This powerful reality series gives a voice to women who have survived gender-based violence. The show creates a safe platform for victims to confront abusers in a controlled and mediated environment.
