10 series to celebrate Human Rights Month

March is Human Rights Month in the lead-up to South Africa’s holiday on Saturday, 21 March. And DStv is home to new series and returning seasons of of favourite local shows – like Mgidi Moms, Fake Pastors and Law, Love & Betrayal – that focus on the law, celebrate our cultures, and assert our communities’ rights to equality, freedom from violence, human dignity, and, above all, the right to practice our own cultures and speak our own languages.

Law, Love & Betrayal

Fake Pastors

Your right: human dignity. Everyone has inherent human dignity which must be respected. Sihle Sibisi – a survivor of TB Joshua’s cult – and the Kwanele Foundation are on the hunt for more cult-like churches led by pastors and “prophets” who’re perverting faith for profit, and abusing people’s human dignity. Victims and worried family members speak out, and we see what happens when people are confronted with evidence that they’re being led astray by twisted scriptures, fake miracles, and commandment-breaking charismatic crooks.

Mgidi Moms

Your right: Language and culture. You have the right to use the language of your choice and practice your own culture. Mothers take us inside the coming-of-age journey of Xhosa boys as they transition into manhood through initiation, one of the most sacred rites of passage in Xhosa culture. Hosted by Moshe Ndiki, each episode introduces the mother of the initiate, following her journey from early preparations to the emotional send-off.

Makoti Bootcamp

Your right: Language and culture. You have the right to use the language of your choice and practice your own culture. This reality series follows a group of modern women sent to a traditional “Makoti Bootcamp”, where they learn the ancient cultural duties expected of brides. Stripped of all luxuries, they face challenges that test their resilience, cultural knowledge, and adaptability. Being a Makoti is not for the faint-hearted; these women bravely confront tradition, unfiltered, to be transformed and grounded in culture.

Sengizwile Bo!

Your right: Freedom and security of the person. You have a right to be free from all forms of violence. This powerful reality series gives a voice to women who have survived gender-based violence. The show creates a safe platform for victims to confront abusers in a controlled and mediated environment. With the goal of accountability, dialogue and intervention, it helps people get through difficult but necessary conversations, while offering support and guidance throughout the process.

Suidooster

Your right: Cultural, religious and linguistic communities. You have the right to form, join and maintain cultural, linguistic and / or religious groupings of your own choice. The Ruiterbosch community is refreshed and ready for drama in this SAFTAs season, and it looks like love is blossoming between Riaan (Daniel Coetzee) and Amanda (Lindie Strydom). Annie and Wade have trust issues; Linda’s life-altering decision changes  Susan and Elena’s lives, too; Rhafiek has a health scare, and cracks show at JPD.

Inimba

Forever Thina

Your right: Life. Everyone has the right to life. Reality series. Host Nonkanyiso “LaConco” Conco (The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip South Africa) helps couples who want to get married without their families’ consent, and explores their stories. They have just three days to organise a party, and on the wedding day itself, they’ll break the news to the family. PS: Samukeleni caught up with couples after the show, and LaConco won the Best TV Presenter SAFTA for Season 1.

After Tears

This reality series follows grieving families as they prepare to lay their loved ones to rest. It takes us to the post-funeral gatherings, commonly known as “after tears”, where family and friends come together to celebrate a life well lived. Blending emotion, remembrance and moments of uplifting reflection, the series captures the sorrow and spirit of these gatherings.

Dloz'lami

Your right: Freedom of religion, belief and opinion. You have the right to think, believe in and belong to a religion of your choice. Whether it is getting closure or clarity following a loved one’s death, local medium Thembi Nyathi helps people to heal through psychic readings in this reality series. “With the help of the spiritual guides, I provide solutions to client’s problems. I validate suspicions around their loved ones passing and encourage them to move on,” explains Thembi.
