Kate Winslet turns the camera lens on war as Lee Miller in the biographical drama Lee. Lady Gaga steals a whole movie in Joker: Folie a Deux, and Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery snatches Mark Wahlberg’s wig in the action thriller, Flight Risk. For the horror girlies, Mia Goth gives stalkers what’s coming to them in MaXXXine, while Beetlejuice Beetlejuice unites the witchy powers of Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Jenna Ortega.

Lee

This critically acclaimed biographical drama about photojournalist Lee Miller (Kate Winslet) takes us to the front lines with her as she bucks social norms to record some of the most devastating and memorable images to come out of Europe during World War II. Lee photographed the aftermath of Dachau and Buchenwald, and the French Resistance shaving the heads of women suspected of collaborating with the Nazis, and recorded the toll the war took on civilians and survivors.

Coming soon: Joker: Folie a Deux

In this musical sequel to Joker – which takes place at Arkham Asylum – Joker/Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) falls in love with fellow inmate Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga), who’s his biggest fan, and he fantasises about them performing together. Meanwhile his lawyer, Maryanne Stewart (Catherine Keener), and his social worker, Debra Kane (Sharon Washington), prepare for his upcoming murder trial. Even seen through the Joker’s distorted lens, Lady Gaga is a hypnotic diva in the role.

US Marshal Madolyn Harris (Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery) is escorting Winston (Topher Grace), an accountant for the Moretti crime family, from Alaska to New York City, when she realises that their pilot, Daryl (Mark Wahlberg), is really an assassin. Madolyn has to think fast to take control of the plane, but she begins to realise that people inside the Marshals office or the FBI have been leaking information about her and her mission to Daryl and the Morettis.

MaXXXine

In this third part of the X horror trilogy – centred on adult film star Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) and wanna-be actress Pearl (also played by Mia Goth in Pearl and X) – Maxine is looking to make a big career move to horror films, but she finds herself at the centre of a real-life horror story when the friends who invite her to Hollywood parties keep getting murdered in Satanic rituals. Maxine is no scream, run and crawl victim, though. She’s a “final girl”.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

With three generations of Deetz women under one roof, things are about to get weird. Thirty-six years after the original Beetlejuice film, we find out what happened to teenaged goth Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) and her artist stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara), as Lydia’s daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) catches the attention of a gross older “man”, the demon Betelgeuse (played by Michael Keaton). Astrid thinks her mom’s ghostly TV talk show is a scam, so she’s in for a surprise.

The Woman King

In early 1800s Benin, General Nanisca (Viola Davis) trains Dahomey's all-female Agojie warriors, including the headstrong Nawi (Thuso Mbedo), Izogie (Lashana Lynch) and Efe (Zozibini Tunzi) to fight back against European and African slave traders. Each of her warriors is already at war in an ongoing battle against their own countrymen, who’re allies one minute, and enemies the next. But within the Agojie compound, Nanisca’s warriors share a sisterhood where they can shape their own identities.

This fun live action movie offers a vision of a world centred around women, and how this clashes with everyday reality – as Barbie (Margot Robbie) discovers when she ventures out of Barbie Land and finds out why some girls don’t want to play with her anymore. And chaos ensues when Ken (Ryan Gosling) tags along and brings America’s men-first attitude back to DreamHouse. Packed with references to how girls really play with dolls, it’s our weird Barbie Land dreams come true.
