Is the proof is out there?

Are UFOs real and do aliens visit the Earth? Those are some of the questions that are answered in series, The Proof is Out There – every Saturday at 20:15 on History (DStv Channel 186).

In each episode, host Tony Harris investigates assumed videos and photos of UFOs and ancient species that are believed to be roaming the world.

Together with the team, Tony sifts through the bizarre to figure out what's real, what’s fake, and what falls in between.

We caught up with him to chat about the show.

How does your diverse background contribute to your approach in hosting The Proof is Out There, which is focused on unexplained phenomena?

It’s a combination of being curious and having an open mind. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a diverse career – from news to sports, to international journalism, and covering disasters all over the world for CNN back in the day – that forces you to have an open mind. I always want to know as much as I can, and hosting The Proof is Out There keeps me exploring.

Could you describe the collaborative process between you and your team of experts in dissecting the evidence that’s presented on the series?

The team includes theoretical physicists as well as forensic audio and video analysts. Although our challenge moving forward [when analyzing the legitimacy of a video] is sifting between the real and the fake videos, we are trying to stay ahead by using the latest technology.

Given the amount of video footage that you receive on the series, how do you decide which cases you’re going to feature on an episode?

There are thresholds that must be met. The video should be of good quality, whether we find it on the web or whether it’s sent to us. The second threshold is it must be interesting. Next, the video must challenge us as experts. The other thing is that it must have some historical underpinning or historical link.

What can they expect from the show and what do you hope they take away from watching it?

There is still so much that we don’t know about this planet that we inhabit. You’re going to find that our world is a lot more interesting, wild, and untamed than you may think it is. Our team shines a light into darker corners and explores unexplained territories. The series is fascinating, and you will come to see your world through a different lens.
