The Women’s Hockey Junior World Cup is currently ongoing in Santiago, Chile, where the Netherlands are the defending champions and looking to claim a fifth title, while the continent of Africa is represented by South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The two African sides finished bottom of their pools and will play in classification playoffs to secure a finish between 16th and ninth place in the tournament, starting on the morning of Tuesday 5 December and continuing to Sunday 10 December.
The quarterfinals will open on Wednesday 6 December, with the Netherlands facing Spain, England taking on Germany, Belgium and Japan meeting in the third clash, and Argentina battling Australia to round out the final eight.
“We are looking forward to playing a fantastic tournament with some great opponents, in a beautiful city at a very nice stadium. As for the result, the Netherlands will always aim to win a medal, with the gold medal as the big dream,” said the Dutch coach, Dave Smolenaars.
The Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup gets underway in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Tuesday 5 December. Pool A pits the host nation alongside defending champions Argentina, Australia and Chile.
Pool B is comprised of France, Germany and Africa’s two representatives: Egypt and South Africa. Pool C features Canada, India, Korea and Spain; while Pool D is made up of Belgium, Netherlands, New Zealand and Pakistan.
The top two teams from each group will advance into the quarterfinals (with the other two teams heading into the classification rounds for ninth to 16th place), which will be followed by semis and a final.
“We will take it one game at a time and our first focus is on playing Germany and then Egypt and then France,” said South Africa coach Guy Ellitto. “[We are] looking to make sure that we put in good performances. If we start thinking too much ahead then we forget about now. It is about doing the little things right and the results will take care of itself.”
Egypt coach Moustafa Khalil noted, “A good number of our players have experience from the previous junior world cup, and our preparation this time has been really good. We hope to perform really well and make our country proud and have the Egyptian flag flying high in this tournament.”
